How has AI changed the way students are learning? This has become a very prevalent question lately for administrators, teachers, students, and even their parents. To what extent is it hindering or facilitating learning and brain development?
Instant Access to Resources and Help
Artificial Intelligence has made learning more adaptive to students’ individual needs. Instead of having a teacher teach in one learning style, now AI can help students learn in the way that is best for them. Explanations can be made simpler or more complex. These can also be geared towards what type of learning style a student has, such as visual learners, auditory learners, writing learners, etc. AI can generate flashcards, study guides, and even songs to help students learn and retain information. Students can simply copy and paste in their notes, and whatever they request will be generated in seconds. Now, students no longer need to anxiously await an email back from their teacher when help is needed.
Role of Teachers
Artificial Intelligence does not replace teachers, however it does simplify their job. Instead of using time and energy to grade individual assignments and tests, AI can now do it for them. This has positive and negative implications. Students might not get as useful feedback, and of course, mistakes can be made. This does, however, free up time for teachers to provide more live instruction, and help students advance their learning more.
The Future
Many are worried that students will become overreliant on technology and lose critical thinking skills. AI is a very helpful tool, but it should not replace actual thought. Artificial intelligence should not be used as a crutch, but instead a way to expand learning.
