There is no secret to it; everyone wants to have friends in college. But this can be challenging when attending a new college where you do not know anyone. This could even be a struggle when you know people, but just want a fresh start! Do not worry, though, there are a few simple ways to jumpstart this process.
Firstly, attending orientation events is huge. Orientation week is specifically designed for meeting new people. Everyone is eager to socialize and is in the same boat as you! You can attend floor meetups in your dorms, and campus fairs offering events to you, and other chances to get involved.
To make friends quickly, a good way to do this is by finding people with similar interests. An easy way to do this is by finding people who share your passions. This is easiest in clubs and organizations. You can look over your university’s official student life directory or website to find groups. Examples would be:
- Join intramural sports teams for casual fun.
- Attend weekly meetings for academic or hobby clubs.
- Look into Greek life or professional fraternities/sororities.
You should also make sure to look at those around you! This would be your roommates or other people on your floor. You can go up to people in the hallway and just strike up conversations!
College can be scary, but do not stress yourself out. Everyone else is with you in these worries, and together you will all get over them!
