School can already be challenging, excluding the whole other set of obstacles that comes with studying abroad. That’s why it’s important to use these tips to make acclimating a little bit easier.
The first is to learn the local language, or at least a few conversational words. Even if your classes are in your native language, this will make navigating the city and friendships easier. New places can be overwhelming. Now, couple that feeling with being surrounded by people you can’t communicate with, and you’ll feel unnecessarily high amounts of stress. Start with basic phrases, questions, and expressions.
The most important tip I can give you is to explore every new opportunity given. This includes people as well as experiences. Being in a new place can feel scary, but it’s easier to navigate that challenge with friends. Meet new people and form new connections. These could be lifelong relationships, both personal and professional. And, try to experience everything and anything you can. Visit all of the tourist attractions but don’t skimp out on the local stuff either. Those hole in the wall places will probably be where you make the memorable experiences.
Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t let the new environment scare you. Go out and have fun!
