Problem-solving is one of the skills you don’t hear about often yet it carries such an importance with it. Problem-solving by simple terms means “the process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues.” (Oxford Languages) But how exactly can you utilize it in your everyday life?
Whether you realize it or not, you use problem-solving pretty regularly! Have you ever had a stain on your favorite top and had to figure out how to get rid of it? Or maybe your baby niece is crying and you don’t know why. These are all little day-to-day problems that humans have to solve in order to carry on. It’s a skill that almost seems built in but it may be to your surprise that problem-solving is a process and is learned with practice. So, with that being said, let’s take a look at a few steps you can follow to encourage growth with problem-solving.
- Identify and understand the problem. What is it asking for?
- Research the systems and practices behind the problem. How does it work?
- Visualize the problem. Does it have any loopholes?
- Brainstorm creative solutions. What is a possible solution?
- Compare and the best answer. Which is more efficient and reliable?
Remember, problem-solving isn’t easy! It’s important to keep in mind that everyone makes mistakes and that no one knows everything. Life is about learning so, make mistakes and learn from them.
