Studying abroad can seem incredibly scary. Most people are afraid because a lot of studying abroad means dealing with the unknown. You’re probably choosing to send yourself to a place where you know almost no one and where the culture is incredibly new to you, but all of it is part of the experience. Studying abroad has both its pros and its cons, but as the years have progressed, so has the number of students choosing to study abroad. In this article, we’ll talk about whether or not this is worth it and whether or not you should take the leap too and study abroad.

What does studying abroad entail?

Studying abroad can mean tons of different things. For some, studying abroad means pursuing a degree in a different country. This can take up to 4 years. For others, studying abroad can be a short-term experience. They might choose to do so through their school for a summer or a semester. Studying abroad is a great educational experience involving a foreign university or an internship outside of the country.

3 Reasons Why Studying Abroad is Great

  1. Immersive cultural experience. Studying abroad offers an immersive cultural experience. You’re out there, on your own, in a new country where people do not operate in the same way as those back at home. Studying abroad will allow you to learn how to adapt to different cultures and how to respect yourself.
  2. Introduces you to new languages. Though this will not apply to all cases and does depend on what language the country you’re in is speaking, if you’re in a new country with a language other than your native tongue, you will end up picking at least a few phrases. Studying abroad allows you the opportunity to learn these languages and see how other people in different cultures speak and communicate with each other.
  3. Fosters your adaptability. Studying abroad is scary. You’ll be basically on your own. You’re going somewhere you don’t know. You’re going somewhere where even the culture is new. You’re going to need to be able to adapt and putting yourself in a situation where you’re challenging yourself to adapt allows you to foster this skill.

The Takeaway

Studying abroad has both its pros and its cons but, for the most part, it offers an immersive, amazing educational experience. You’re also young and at a point in your life where you get to choose what you want to do. Why not take a leap of faith and take the opportunity to learn new languages and immerse yourself in new cultures?
