When you’re faced with a problem, do you adapt or do you give up? This is one of the key characteristics someone successful in their field must possess: the ability to adapt to any situation and be flexible enough to work under difficult conditions and still come out successful.

In this blog post, we’ll go over flexibility and why it is important in terms of the workplace.

What is Flexibility?

Flexibility is your capacity to adjust to change and deal with unexpected problems with professionalism and as effectively as possible.

For instance, let’s say you’re working in a team setting and on the day of your big presentation, your team member ends up falling ill. They obviously cannot come to work and continue with the presentation. As a flexible person, you should be able to work around this problem and come out on top. Maybe you could divide the team member’s part of the presentation between the remaining team members and yourself. Maybe you could present their part yourself. It’s entirely up to you.

Why is it important?

Problems will not always come with a 3-day warning. Most of the time, these problems will be unexpected and worrying. If you’re flexible, you should be able to deal with these problems and continue carrying out your tasks effectively.

Learning to be flexible is important and cultivating this skill will prove to be useful in any team setting and in any work you may have to do.

The Takeaway

Take on new responsibilities. Show your boss that you are a capable individual, ready to adapt to new roles and respond to change.
